KNOWLEDGE
IS POWER!!
Find out as much as you can before making your purchase on a diamond. The more
educated you become, the better price, and higher grade
diamond you will receive.
When at the dealing with online dealers or local jewelers make sure to get the
market value for the diamond you’re interested in. Look at the quality of
the loose diamonds the Jeweler is quoting you on. Online Jeweler's will have photos
of the diamond and a certificate scanned for you to see online. If your interested
in further examining the diamond they will in many cases send the diamond to a
local jeweler within your area for you to examine. You should always consult with
the jeweler on what is recommended from you to secure a viewing/sale of the diamond.
My suggestion would be to examine many jewelers online and their diamonds. Get
an opinion on their service and quality of stones. Read their testimonials or
the testimonials of past consumers from diamond forums online such as diamondchitchat.com.
When you have narrowed your selection to 3-4 diamonds then call the dealers or
email them with your questions. We have a PDF file "Diamond
Ring CheckList" for you to print. It will help you ask the right questions,
and make comparisons when shopping.
Next, you want to find out if the diamond is certified. If so,
is it with a recognized Gem Institution such as GIA, AGS, and not some unheard
institution? Try to get the information from the certificate if possible. After
visiting a few online or local Jewelers, seeing similar diamonds displayed elsewhere
evaluate the prices, find out if the diamond comes with the certificate from
the gem lab. Make sure when comparing prices, they are based the same type of
diamond identified on the certificate that comes with the diamond.
Make note that minor differences in cut can have a severe impact
on the price and beauty of the diamond. The most important point to remember
is not to compare the price of a certified diamond with a price of a non certified
diamond, or a diamond certified by a less reputable gem laboratory.
Unless you’re in for a good shock.
